Archiving the Six Gentlemen

2026 | Ink and colour on paper | 52.5 x 35 cm

This artwork displays a tranquil interior space: outside the window lies a stormy, turbulent sea, as if the external world were in violent upheaval. Inside, an ordinary cabinet and a silent potted plant create a seemingly safe corner of refuge.

Carefully archived within the cabinet is a traditional landscape image, referencing Yuan dynasty painter Ni Zan’s classic Six Gentlemen. The six trees in the painting each represent a distinct gentlemanly persona and virtue—uprightness, aloofness, resilience, humility, clarity, and detachment—which, together with the distant mountains and plains, construct a typically Ni Zan- ideal world of sparse detachment. The artist carefully collects this traditional landscape, a symbol of human virtue, within a modern private cabinet, as if discreetly sealing those principles and character traits—increasingly fragile in contemporary reality—into a private space belonging solely to oneself.

The din of raging winds and waves outside the window stands in stark contrast to the stillness inside. Even as the external world endures wind and rain, this artwork proposes a quiet yet resolute thesis: when public sanctuary (typhoon shelters) is no longer reliable, people can still cultivate inner virtues and principles within the most private domains, guarding them in silence. It continues the consistent language of trees as personality projections within the series—from the resilience of a solitary tree on a deserted island to the carefully collected Six Gentlemen here, the trees are no longer just natural landscapes but the last, hidden persistence of humanity in times of trouble.
