Silent Guardians

2025 | Ink, colour, silver and copper leaf on paper | 40 x 80cm

Project of JCCAC Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 Parallel Exhibitions「廠景」 "On-site"

This artwork is inspired by the story of "The North Wind and the Sun." In the story, the traveller becomes an innocent victim of the competition between the North Wind and the Sun, being buffeted by strong winds and scorched by sunlight. What particularly caught my attention is that the illustrations in the storybook often depict trees accompanying the traveller, capable of blocking the sunlight while also showcasing the power of the wind. However, the text of the story makes no mention of these trees. Compared to the traveller, the presence of the trees seems insignificant, yet they silently and gently protect the Earth in real life.  The visual of the painting presents a perspective from inside a cave, looking out to see the bent pine trees. The cave symbolises our narrow view of the story, while I focus on those overlooked trees. Whether these bent pine trees are bowing under the pressure of the wind or leaning in search of the warmth of the sun leaves infinite room for the viewer's imagination.  This artwork explores how small and fragile existences silently endure and protect in the face of competition and power. The trees' silent resilience symbolises respect and appreciation for nature, reminding us not to overlook the forces that quietly support us while we pursue our goals. At the same time, it reflects how many seemingly insignificant elements in life can invisibly influence our journey.
